Department of Medicine/SGHM, USAF Medical Center Keesler, Keesler AFB, Mississippi, Section of Cardiovascular Diseases, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas Ergot intoxication is a syndrome recognized in the Middle Ages that was due to the effects of intense vasoconstriction upon the extremities. The authors present a patient with self-induced ergotamine poisoning who presented with vasospasm of the right lower extremity and had historical evidence suggestive of vasoconstriction involving other vascular systems. Excess ergot effect should be considered in the differential diagnosis of vascular insufficiency.
